  7. The original development of laser mining
  8. inspired a near frenzy of underground   
  9. drilling. The heavy-construction lasers 
  10. drilled in any shape and nearly any size
  11. up to eight meters,and left a smooth,   
  12. nearly impervious melt layer on the     
  13. inner surface that was structurally     
  14. sound. So an enthusiasm for underground 
  15. maglev transportation developed in the  
  16. 20s and 30s. With the increasing use of 
  17. liquid nitrogen and ground effect       
  18. vehicles, which were less               
  19. environmentally damaging, more          
  20. conservative of energy resources, and   
  21. considerably more pleasant to use since 
  22. they operated in the open air, most of  
  23. the lased tunnels were converted to     
  24. underground habitation or abandoned.
